In der WIM haben sie sich kennen gelernt, jetzt ermöglicht die WIM das erste musikalische Zusammentreffen. Die ungebändigte Energie der Pianistin Okuda und der Spielwitz des Saxofonisten Labhart werden in einem glücklichen Set voller unerwarteter Momente aufgehen.

Biografien

Rieko Okuda is a pianist and a composer. She began with Classical music from the age of 3, in Japan. In her young age, she attended to Kaizuka city Piano Competition, and got the first prize. Later then moved to USA to study and learn Jazz music. She fell right into the Jazz scene in USA, performing with some of the great American Jazz musicians (Bob Mintzer, Jon Faddis, John Fedchock etc.) Also, she got interested in Free Jazz and Improvised music scene while she was in Phliladelphia. She performed with the great improvisers includes Marshall Allen (from San Ra Orchestra), Elliott Levine (recorded with Cecil Taylor), and Calvin Weston (recorded with Ornette Coleman). She has performed in Jazz Festivals throughout her stay in USA. Her interests in Improvised music led her to move to Berlin and perform with various musicians. Currently, she performs with Audrey Chen, Els Vendaweyer, Susanne Zapf (from Sonar Quartet), Yuko Kaseki, Axel Dörner, ect. She also performs at several experimental festivals: XChange Festival, Experymental Festival, and Art-Sound Festival to name a few.

In 2014, she got to work with Japanese Pop Artist, YUZU. She arranged the song called “Amenochi Hareruya,“ which awarded Japan Record Award 2014.

Jonas Labhart (saxophone, electronics)

After studying Saxophone performance and pedagogy at Berklee College of Music and HMT Zurich, Jonas moved to New York to study Jazz Composition with Jim McNeely and Rich DeRosa. During his three year long stay he not only optained a Masters of Music in Jazz Composition but was also a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop and conducted his pieces’s world premiere for Big Band at Merkin Hall. Back in Zurich he studied classical music theory and analysis at ZHdK.
Jonas lives in Zurich and performs in Switzerland, Europe and Japan with „Désonic“ (with David Potaux-Razel, Stéphane Cochet and Eric Groleau), „Swanky Mothers“ (with Beat Gisler, Marius Peyer, Dominic Landolt and Daniel Mouthon) and Kŗ★ʼnK (with Laura Schuler and Berni Doessegger). As a composer his work ranges from jazz arrangements for orchestra to contemporary classical works for quarter-tone trumpet. He teaches saxophone and music theroy at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK and at the regional music school Zürcher Oberland. As a member of the board and president of WIM (Werkstatt für Improvisierte Musik Zürich www.wimmusic.ch) he helps to organize weekly concerts of improvised music and is interested in influencing the music scene in a lasting and positive way.
